Can you lay lightweight roof tiles on top of your existing conservatory roof?

Conservatory refurbished with a Metrotile Lightweight Roof System Shingle Charcoal

We now demand so much more from our conservatories than a traditional “summer room”. Most families want to enjoy using their conservatory all year round for everything from a second living area, playroom or “man-cave” to a work-space/office and/or an additional bedroom all of which may not be compatible with an existing clear roof, such as glass or uPVC.

Ideal roof choice

A solid roof is the obvious choice for a replacement, combining a more pleasant and flexible space which you can use in all seasons with added security and energy-saving to ultimately help reduce those bills.

However, using traditional tiles, such as slate or clay, is a problem:

  • the increased weight places a strain on your conservatory’s supporting structure and foundations
  • removing and replacing the existing roof is the only viable option

So can you really lay lightweight roof tiles on top of your existing conservatory roof?
This is generally not possible with traditional tiles because of their weight. However, Metrotile lightweight roof tiles make an excellent solid roof choice because they:

  • weigh less than 15% (up to one seventh) of the equivalent slate or clay tiles
  • don’t compromise on either security or the look of your conservatory
  • can be installed without damaging your conservatory’s supporting structure and foundations
  • place less strain on your conservatory’s supporting structure and foundations

The added benefit of using Metrotile lightweight roof tiles also means that you may have two installation options:

  • Remove and replace – the traditional removal of an existing roof and replacing it, as you would do with traditional tiles or

  • Wrap around” – placing the new roof over and under the existing roof structure meaning you can now lay roof tiles on top of your existing conservatory roof.

Wrap around” or laying roof tiles on top of your existing conservatory roof is possible with Metrotile lightweight roof tiles because their reduced weight means you don’t need to worry about the stability of your existing conservatory’s structure, making it an option for most replacement conservatory roofs. You can even probably still use your inside space whilst your new roof is being fitted.
