How to maintain your conservatory roof

Conservatory refurbished with a Metrotile Lightweight Roof System Shingle Charcoal Burnt Umber

Your conservatory should be a pleasant and useful addition to your property, not costly and time-consuming. How you maintain your conservatory roof depends on the materials that your conservatory is made of, and frustratingly, it’s true that certain types of roofing are going to cause you a lot more hassle than others.

Glass and polycarbonate roofs

Failing to clean and maintain the glass or polycarbonate roof of your conservatory is only going to cause you even further problems in the future. These types of roofs require a lot of maintenance, as they are extremely prone to the general wear and tear of nature.

You will need to ensure that you regularly clean a glass or polycarbonate roof, as moss, dirt and debris can attack the seals and lead to leaks or loosened panels. These types of roofing also leave a conservatory subject to condensation build-up, resulting in damp and mould. Equipping your conservatory with a dehumidifier will help with condensation, but can be noisy and take up space.

Glass or polycarbonate roofs tend to be damaged by harsh weather conditions, or even during maintenance and repairs to your conservatory. This is why they often have short life spans of around 10 to 15 years, while failure to maintain these types of roofs will affect their longevity further.

Solid roofing

Solid conservatory roofs actually require virtually no maintenance; they are much sturdier than glass or polycarbonate roofing, and are durable enough to handle bad weather more effectively. They also make it easier to control the room temperature of your conservatory, preventing condensation.

As solid conservatory roofs rarely need repairing, this means that their ongoing cost is significantly reduced, and damage occurring while repair work is carried out is far less likely. They also have an estimated life span of around 50 years, although they often last for longer.

Choosing a solid conservatory roof will also save you money through reduced energy bills as a result of good insulation, allow you to use your conservatory all year-round, while adding aesthetic appeal to your property.

Metrotile’s lightweight tiles are nearly 8 times lighter than typical roof tiles, meaning they won’t harm the supporting structure of your conservatory, while our 40-year weatherproof guarantee on all lightweight solid tiles means that you’ll be free of frustrating and unexpected expenses.

Replacing your conservatory roof

If the maintenance of your glass or polycarbonate roof is becoming too much of a burden, you have the option to replace it with a lightweight solid tile roof. This can be done one of two ways, by the traditional practice of removing and replacing the roof, or with Metrotile lightweight solid roof tiles, you can choose to place the new roof over and under the existing roof structure, without compromising either the security or look of your conservatory.
