When to replace your conservatory roof

conservatory roofing

No one wants to have invested in a conservatory, only to have it rendered useless by a roof that just isn’t doing its job. Replacing your conservatory roof may seem like a lot of hassle, not to mention a lot of money, but there’s actually some cost-effective options available that will ensure you won’t be in the same situation any time soon.

Glass and polycarbonate roofs

These types of roofing have short life spans of around 10 to 15 years, so don’t be too surprised if you find yourself having to replace it. Moss, dirt and debris can attack the seals of a glass or polycarbonate conservatory roof and lead to leaks or loosened panels, while condensation build-up may cause damp and mould.

Harsh weather conditions can also cause damage to a conservatory roof of this material, and damage can even occur during maintenance work. If your conservatory roof is old, leaking or damaged, or if you simply cannot keep on top of the regular maintenance that your glass or polycarbonate conservatory roof requires, it sounds like it’s time to replace it.

Solid conservatory roofs

Solid conservatory roofs have much longer life spans than glass and polycarbonate roofing, averaging at around 50 years, although they tend to last even longer. As tiled conservatory roofs are much sturdier, they can survive bad weather conditions more effectively, and better insulation means that it’s possible to control the room temperature of your conservatory, preventing condensation.

Solid roof tiles come with lots of benefits for both your conservatory and your bank account. Glass and polycarbonate roofs tend to leave your conservatory too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, but a solid roof means more flexibility as you are able to regulate room temperature and use your conservatory any time of the year, while installing Velux windows will also add light and ventilation.

The added insulation of a solid roof means that energy bills, and your carbon footprint are reduced, while unpeaceful external noise is cancelled out. A solid conservatory roof give the feel of an extension rather than a conservatory, and could actually increase the value of your property.

Replacing your conservatory roof

Metrotile lightweight tiles are nearly 8 times lighter than typical roof tiles, meaning that you have two installation options when replacing your conservatory roof.

Remove and replace

One method is to remove the roof entirely in order to replace it. This can be done by a professional installation company, or an approved Metrotile contractor, and will involve removing the roof altogether to provide a platform to begin building more secure rafters to support the weight of the roof that will be placed on top of it.

‘Wrap around’

With Metrotile lightweight roof tiles, it is possible to place the new roof over and under the existing roof structure, this will not compromise the look or security of your conservatory, and will not damage its supporting structure.

Metrotile offer a 40-year weatherproof guarantee on all of our lightweight roof tiles, so once it’s been replaced, it’s safe. For any more information please don’t hesitate to call us on 01249 658 514, or fill in a contact form and we’ll be in touch.
