Though you may be looking forward to the summer weather, with parts of the UK experiencing snow this April, your mind may be cast towards keeping your home warm next winter. Avoid feeling chills in winter 2016/17 by modifying your home now in preparation for what could be a snowy winter.

Let nature do its work

It may be tempting to keep curtains closed during the day to keep heat in, but this is much more likely to make your home colder. Let the sunshine naturally heat up your home during the day, and close your windows at dusk to retain as much of the natural heat as possible.

Install loft insulation

The Energy Saving Trust says that 25% of heat loss happens through the roof. While this might not be the place where the majority of your home’s heat is lost, installing loft insulation can reduce heat loss by up to a quarter and save you a considerable amount on your energy bills.

If you believe that a higher percentage of heat is being lost because of missing or broken roof tiles, then replacing your roof can mean that you end up with a home that is better protected from the elements and where heat is less likely to escape through the roof. A thin tile, like Metrotile’s steel roofing, allows for additional insulation to be added without taking up much room.

Draught Proofing

Improving heat retention within the home isn’t all about making major changes. In fact, there are some smaller modifications you can make that will dramatically reduce the amount of hot air leaving your home.

Replacing seals in windows and doors can stop hot air from escaping and cool air from entering your home, as can hanging thicker curtains that fit properly. For quicker fixes, use self-adhesive seals, and draught excluders along the bottom of exterior and interior doors.

Upgrade your Windows

Draught proofing may not be enough if you’ve got old, single or double-glazed windows in your home. Feeling draughty may be a sign that it’s time to upgrade and introduce new double or triple-glazing to your home. Improved technology and materials can mean that although you may be faced with an expensive upfront cost, you save plenty of money, and are far warmer in the long run.
