Can you put a tiled roof on a conservatory?

Conservatory refurbished with a Metrotile Lightweight Roof System Shingle Charcoal

Perhaps you struggle to keep your conservatory at a reasonable temperature or are concerned about weather damage, vandalism or theft. If so, you may have considered replacing your existing conservatory roof with a tiled roof. But is this a viable option or would you have to rebuild your whole conservatory? What are the benefits if you were able to install tiles? And do you need planning permission?

Using lightweight tiles

The key concern about adding a tiled roof is its weight. Conservatory walls are not as sturdy as traditional walls and will not be able to support a heavy roof. Using weighty tiles will compromise the structure of your conservatory and could lead to breakages and even injury. However, if you pick suitable lightweight tiles it is possible, and can be extremely beneficial, to replace your conservatory roof with tiles.

The benefits of a tiled conservatory roof

Typical conservatory roofs tend to make the room uncomfortably hot during sunny spells and unfeasibly cold during the winter months. Tiled roofs help you regulate the temperature while retaining plenty of natural light. Tiled roofs are also less likely to attract condensation, which can lead to drips, distortion and the build-up of mould.

Tiled roofs often come with a lengthy weatherproof guarantee that is not always available from conservatory roof providers. And, as they are so easy to maintain, the costs are likely to be very low once your tiled roof is in place. Finally, tiled roofs offer much better protection against vandals and intruders than glass or PVC alternatives.

Planning permission

At one time, a certain percentage of conservatory roofing had to be translucent in order to exempt them from planning permission, but changes to building regulations mean you may no longer need planning permission for a solid roof on a conservatory, although you may still be subject to rules of the Neighbour Consultation Scheme. Check the Planning Portal website before undertaking work on your conservatory roof.
