Conservatory refurbished with a Metrotile Lightweight Roof System Shingle Charcoal and Velux Window

A conservatory can be a wonderful additional to a home as it provides additional space that can be used throughout the year. When deciding what materials to use when extending your home by adding a conservatory, you may decide that you would prefer it to appear more consistent with the exterior of your home.

By having a conservatory installed that has a solid roof, or changing the roofing of your existing conservatory, you can create a space that has a similar appearance to the rest of your property, and provides many additional benefits, including better insulation. If your home currently has a slate roof, then you may be wondering whether you could use slate roof tiles on your conservatory.

Can I use real slate tiles on my conservatory roof?

While aesthetically slate is an appealing material for conservatory roofing, it is unsuitable for use as the tiles are too heavy for the structure to support. As conservatory walls are typically constructed using wood, uPVC, or other modern materials, they are unable to support heavy roofs, which is why lightweight conservatory roof tiles are required when installing or replacing.

Are there any alternatives?

Though you are won’t be able to use real slate to roof your conservatory, you can still choose tiles that resemble slate. Metrotile’s Slate II tiles are lighter than traditional roof tiles (all of our tiles weigh up to 1/7th of traditional roof tiles) meaning that they are suitable for use on conservatories and other structures that are unable to support a heavy roof.

Metrotile offer a wide variety of different tiles designs that are suitable for conservatories. Browse our website to see tile profiles, or get in touch with a member of our team for further information about how our tiles can be used in your building project.
