How long do solar panels last?

Solar panels are generally very robust as their design is actually relatively simple with no moving parts to breakdown. This means they can easily last for decades, with many older solar panels having lasted 30-40 years or more while still producing electricity. There are a number of factors that will affect exactly how long solar panels will continue to produce electricity for you.

Reduced efficiency

One key thing to bear in mind is that your photovoltaics will tend to become less efficient at converting the sun’s energy into power over time. Over the years it has been observed that most solar systems will lose around half a percent of their original efficiency with each passing year.

This means that although your system will steadily produce less and less energy, the rate of decline should not be a major concern. At this rate, even after 40 years your panels would still be producing 80% as much energy as when they were first installed. Given that the panels will likely have paid for their installation several times over by then, it still makes them a very sound investment.

Solar inverter

In most photovoltaic systems, the first thing that is likely to breakdown is the solar inverter. This piece of equipment takes the direct current (DC) produced by your solar panels and converts it into the alternating current (AC) that your house and all its appliances use.

Because the solar inverter is more complicated than the panels it will tend to have a shorter lifespan, however, they still typically last for around 20 years or more. As the inverter is separate to the panels it can be easily replaced, allowing your system to keep functioning effectively for decades more.

Physical damage

Although it is rare, solar panels can suffer physical damage from things such as falling tree branches or particularly high winds. If this happens you may need to replace the affected panels, although the system as a whole should still continue to function.

Get energy from the sun for years to come with Metrotile

Metrotile’s photovoltaic roof tiles offer an attractive and long-lasting alternative to standard solar panels. Instead of sitting on top of your roof, our solar roof tiles form an integral part of your roof as the photovoltaics are built directly into the roof tiles. This not only makes them more attractive, it also means they are less exposed to the elements so will last longer due to reduced wear and tear from weather. Our panels are also modular, meaning that if a panel is damaged for any reason it can easily be replaced without the need to replace the entire installation.
