Loft Conversions

A loft conversion can boost the value of your property by around a fifth. Unsurprisingly, this makes them pretty popular. If you’re looking to gain more space, but don’t want the cost and stress of moving, converting an underused loft space has several advantages.

Practicality

A converted loft can be a highly flexible space, with people frequently using them to add bedrooms, offices, playrooms, gyms, bathrooms and even entire guest suites. This is not always true for other options, such as conservatories, which can be limited by their relative lack of privacy.

Loft conversions also don’t take away any of your precious garden or drive space, unlike ground floor extensions. Often as much as a third of a house’s potential living space is undeveloped in a loft, meaning you can easily gain loads of extra space from a conversion.

Perhaps most appealingly, loft conversions do not usually require planning permission. Unless your plans will substantially change the appearance of the building, you should be able to do whatever you want (although you will still need to conform to building regulations).

Liveability

As long as the apex of the roof is at least 2.2m (7ft 6in) above the floor level, your loft should make a comfortable living space. You can usually get plenty of great storage under the eaves, making lofts into superefficient rooms.

Lofts can be great for natural light, as you usually end up with several external “walls” to fit windows into. The top two options are windows that sit flat against the roof, such as Velux windows, and Dormer windows, that stick out from the roof. The advantage with Velux windows is that they let in loads of light and usually don’t require planning permission (although they are subject to building regulations). Dormer windows, on the other hand, do require planning permission but can add valuable extra headroom to your loft space.

Make your home more energy efficient

Poorly insulated roofs cost homeowners a fortune thanks to heat loss. A conversion offers the perfect opportunity to fix this by adding insulation, or even replacing your roof system entirely. Metrotile’s lightweight design and thin profile makes it ideal for anyone wanting to pack plenty of insulation into their roof. Plus, our ultra tight-fitting tiles with their 40 year weatherproof guarantee mean you won’t have to worry about losing heat through poorly fitted or missing tiles.

We also offer a range of photovoltaic roof tiles, which are a fantastic way to reduce your energy bills and your carbon footprint. Our photovoltaic system has a much lower profile than traditional systems, meaning it blends more successfully with the rest of your roof. That way you end up with a roof that looks great and saves you money!
