What To Do When Your Roof Tiles Fall Off

While roof tiles are much stronger than they appear to be in fiction or on the TV, they still pose a risk of falling from your roof. With the immediate risk to your safety and the safety of pedestrians around, they also can cause damage to the interior of your home resulting in serious leaks.

Try not to worry too much if your tiles are securely fixed to your roof as the odds of them falling is quite slim. However, there are a few things you need to consider which could impact this general rule.

General wear and tear

First of all, even if your tiles are secure, they won’t stay this way forever because they will begin to lose their security with age. You also need to be mindful of heavy weather conditions like snow, rain, wind, and hail.

Weather conditions can have a dramatic effect on the strength of your roof tiles. Stormy weather, in particular, can often be the cause for tiles coming loose, especially ones on the outer edge of your roof.

Regardless, one of the first things you should do if you spot a fallen roof tile is to try and identify the source.

Identify the problem

Identifying the cause of fallen roof tiles might sound simple but it can more difficult than you think. If you’ve just experienced some extreme weather, then that’s likely to be the cause.

Have you just had work done to the roof? If so, then installers walking on your roof may have loosened some tiles, resulting in them falling off completely. Recently installed roof tiles shouldn’t be falling off, so contact your installer or construction work to diagnose the fault. In this instance, the roofing should still be in warranty and they should be able to resolve the issue.

As well as the top of your roof, you need to consider the underside. Tiles that have fallen off will expose the waterproof barrier and can lead to serious leaks in your property if not fixed quickly.
