Signs that your Roof Might Need Replacing

Local Authority Cornish Unit Roof and Mansard Refurbishments with Metrotile Lightweight Roofing in Bond Red

A problem with your roof can easily go undetected as you busy yourself with everyday life, but neglected repairs can cause long term, serious problems throughout your home that are difficult and costly to fix. Making regular checks (a minimum of twice a year) can help you find faults in your roofing and avoid potential disasters around the rest of the house. Here are some key things to look out for when checking your roof for faults.

Interior Checks

  • Signs of Water Damage- Water damage in the upper storeys of your property is often a clear sign of a damaged roof, but can easily be overlooked. Watermarks, damp patches, mould and mildew can be blamed on a poorly ventilated room, but can be because of a roof in need of repair. As water can leak into a property from the smallest of holes, a gap or crack might not be easy to see initially. More obvious signs of water damage include sagging or bowed parts of the roof.
  • Outside light is visible- If you can see daylight through your roof tiles in your attic or loft space, then it is likely that your roof is in need of repair. Even small gaps that allow daylight to fall through need attention, as this could be the start of a larger problem.

Exterior Checks

  • Missing Roof Tiles- If there are any roof tiles missing, then there is an obvious problem that needs to be dealt with straight away. A missing tile might not seem like an immediate issue during a period of dry weather, but can be the beginning of more serious problems. From water penetration to providing easy access to pests, a missing roof tile should be replaced quickly and properly.
  • Parts of Tile in the Gutters or on the Ground– Parts of tiles, or excessive amounts of granular material on the floor or in the gutters are a clear sign of a roof in need of repair.
