Any roofing system is only as strong and durable as the fixings that secure it to the roof structure. That’s why Metrotile installation guidelines specify four fixings per tile, which, once tiles are lapped, creates eight fixing points per tile. This approach ensures long-term strength, wind resistance and a roof that remains watertight and weatherproof for over 40 years.

A common question we’re asked is: do you need to nail every roof tile? On a Metrotile steel roof system, the answer is yes. Every tile is mechanically or hand-fixed to ensure consistent performance, particularly in exposed or high-wind locations.

What fixings can I use on a steel roof?

Choosing the right fixings is just as important as choosing the right tile. Metrotile roofs are designed as a dry-fix system, meaning tiles are mechanically secured to the battens rather than bonded with mortar.

Nails for roof tiles

The most common fixing method uses roof tile nails, with tiles hand-nailed directly into the battens. Because steel tiles require a robust fastening, standard tile nails are not suitable.

Metrotile supplies double-dipped, galvanised roofing tile nails, specifically designed for steel roofing systems. These nails for roof tiles provide a strong, corrosion-resistant fixing and prevent rust from occurring where exposed steel components meet.

It’s worth noting that aluminium roof tile nails and concrete roof tile nails are not recommended for steel roof systems, as they are designed for different materials and fixing requirements.

Mechanical fixing with nail guns

For larger projects, hand-nailing every tile can be time-consuming. In these cases, nail guns can be used to mechanically fix lightweight steel roof tiles. Gun nail strips are loaded into the tool and allow for faster, accurate installation while maintaining correct fixing depth and consistency.

Screws for roof tiles

When installing thicker gauge tiles, such as Metrotile’s double-thickness, anti-vandal .900 mm steel tiles, nailing becomes impractical. In these situations, screws for roof tiles are required.

High-performance roof tile screws provide a secure fixing where nailing would be difficult or unsafe, ensuring the tiles remain firmly fixed without damaging the tile or batten beneath.
