A conservatory (or orangery) is a great place to relax and unwind but to many people, they are very much seasonal spaces. While a conservatory is ideal for the spring and summer months you actually can enjoy them all year round despite what most people think.

The winter isn’t likely to be most people’s favourite time to stay in their conservatory because of the lack of heat making your conservatory a cooler place to be. But you can still enjoy your conservatory during the winter and make it more hospitable.

You can even make it a reasonably warm space if you’re willing to invest some money and deal with some minor construction work. There are actually lots of different ways you can go about ensuring you aren’t freezing cold in your conservatory during the winter.

Electric Heaters

Electric heaters come in many shapes and sizes, some are reasonably cheap while others can be much more expensive.

Electric heaters are useful and can generate surprising amounts of heat, however, there are some downsides to them. They can be temperamental, will likely need to be moved from room to room and can add a big cost to your energy bills. Overall, they’re not the most convenient method for generating heat and can be expensive to run.

Radiators

Yes, just like the rest of your home your conservatory can also have radiators, however, they aren’t exactly the same. The majority of conservatory radiators will be much smaller than regular ones and while they do give off a generous amount of heat you do need adequate wall space to install them. Depending on the design and construction of your conservatory installing radiators might simply not be an option.

Draft Stoppers

Draft stoppers come in all kinds of designs; some can be long rectangular pieces that are made from a foam-like material, while some are even designed to work like tape. Draft stoppers in any form are very useful for doors and in some cases windows but they are very limited.

The issue with draft stoppers is they only help you maintain heat and keep the cold out, they themselves don’t generate any heat. So, while they are useful they have they need to be used in conjunction with another kind of heating source.

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is one of the most popular ways to ensure your conservatory is comfortable all year round. It solves a lot of the problems with electric heaters because the heat flows upwards so there’s less chance of heat escaping through the glass.

Underfloor heating will also work with any kind of flooring and if you have a plush rug or carpeting it can actually help you maintain the heat for longer. Underfloor heating also doesn’t take up any space like electric heaters or radiators. There is a downside however as the costs can rack up extremely high.

Roof Improvements

Finally, one other great way to ensure your conservatory maintains heat better during the winter is with a roof conversion.
