Can you make your conservatory more energy efficient?

Conservatory refurbished with a Metrotile Lightweight Roof System Shingle Charcoal Burnt Umber

Everyone who has a conservatory knows that in the winter it’s probably going to be the coldest room in the house. With this in mind, you probably only have a few choices; whack the heating up, put on lots of layers or simply avoid using it. Having presumably spent a lot of money having a conservatory built or paying for the benefits of having one already, it seems like both a waste of money and an inconvenience to not be able to use it for up to 4 months of the year. And if you do use it, your bills and carbon footprint could be massively increased. Here are a few ways to improve the energy efficiency of your conservatory.

Specialist glass

A big source of heat loss is through the windows. If you have an old conservatory with single glazing, then replacing those windows with energy efficient double glazing will help retain the heat and keep your bills low. What makes it specialist is some glass comes with special coatings to keep heat from escaping in the winter.

Short term insulation

As is logical most of the heat is lost through the roof (heat rises if you remember your lessons at school) so making sure that this part of your conservatory isn’t leaking heat is key. One short-term solution that can help is insulation. Because the glass or polycarbonate roofing lets heat escape so easily putting some extra insulation in can help trap heat. If you’re comfortable doing DIY, then you can even install this insulation yourself.

Long term roofing

A longer term solution could be a new lightweight roof specifically designed for conservatories. This conservatory roofing could significantly improve your insulation, reducing your home heating bills and, as they weigh much less that “traditional” roofing materials, you know that it isn’t going to put undue pressure on your existing framework.

Luckily Metrotile can help. Our lightweight steel roofs weigh up to one seventh of standard roofing materials, come with a 40 year weatherproof guarantee and can easily incorporate Velux windows and ventilation systems.
