Damaged Rosemary Roof Tiles Replaced With Metrotile Bond On School Roof

Case Study

Metrotile Bond the go-to solution for damaged clay tiles on Grangehurst Primary School, Coventry.

The Challenge

Grangehurst Primary School was facing significant issues with its traditional rosemary tile roof. Over time, the tiles had become damaged, which led to the membrane and insulation rotting. One section of the building also suffered from interstitial condensation, creating further structural concerns.

Compounding the issue, several Velux windows had been incorrectly installed with the wrong flashing kit for the roof pitch. This contributed to ongoing leaks and performance problems. At the same time, new government building regulations meant the school’s roof insulation needed to be completely rebuilt to achieve modern U-Value standards.

The roof’s inefficiency was beginning to impact the school’s energy bills, with rising costs caused by heat loss and poor thermal performance. A full roof replacement was essential.

The Solution

Metrotile Bond was chosen as the ideal replacement. The profile closely replicates the appearance of traditional rosemary tiles, maintaining the building’s heritage and character; and with a mammoth 2481m2 of roof space to cover, Metrotile’s lightweight roof tiles being up to 7 times lighter per metre squared than traditional clay tiles helped with easier transport and fast-installation whilst massively reducing the weight bearing on the roof structure to ease concerns.

Although many surrounding buildings used the same Bond tile in Metrotile’s rich, brown colour – Bronze, Coventry Council felt strongly that Brindle, a classic, Terracotta shade with a distinct rustic look, would make the school stand out as a striking landmark. The decision proved popular – with the finished roof catching attention as a vibrant focal point in the community.

The Installation

The project, supplied by Moores Roofing Supplies and carried out by Russell Trew Ltd, required precision installation to ensure both performance and visual appeal. A broken bond method was used to align the tile pattern, creating a seamless finish across the large roof area.

Work was carefully scheduled to avoid disruption to school life. Most of the installation was completed before the summer holidays, with the school continuing to operate and host activities while work progressed. Importantly, there was no need to evacuate the building during the project.

Results

The completed Metrotile roof has transformed Grangehurst Primary School. The Brindle finish has given the building a distinctive new look, while the enhanced insulation and correctly installed components have delivered long-term protection, compliance with modern building standards, and improved energy efficiency.

By combining aesthetics, performance, and practicality, the project ensures that Grangehurst Primary School is now equipped with a roof that will last for decades to come.
