Metrotile’s Fire-Proof Roof Tiles Key For New Fire Service Training Centre

Case Study

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Authority adopt for Metrotile Bond roof tiles on Award Winning Training Academy.

In 2024, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Authority completed a new Community Training & Development Academy, in Aintree, Merseyside, designed to support both operational fire service training and community education around fire safety protocols.

The building needed to meet strict performance requirements while remaining practical, durable and future-focused — particularly given the nature of live training exercises carried out on site.

Fire Performance as a Priority

Fire safety was the foremost consideration when selecting the roofing system. Metrotile Bond in Charcoal was specified primarily for its B Roof T4 fire rating, confirming the roof’s non-combustible performance and ability to withstand fire exposure.

This rating gave confidence that the roof system would safely perform during fire service drills and training scenarios, where exposure to heat, equipment and simulated conditions is routine.

Designed for Durability & Access

Unlike many commercial roofs, the academy roof needed to be regularly accessed and walked on as part of training exercises. A durable steel roofing solution was therefore essential.

Metrotile’s pressed steel tile system provided the required strength and resilience, ensuring the roof could withstand foot traffic without compromising long-term performance or weather tightness.

Creating Usable Space

To support ongoing training and administration, the project also required new office and learning spaces. The use of a pitched roof allowed additional internal headroom to be created, maximising usable space for staff and trainees alike.

Roof windows were easily incorporated into the design, bringing natural daylight into the building. These have remained fully watertight since installation, supporting a comfortable and practical working environment.

Sustainable Energy Integration

Sustainability was another key consideration for the academy. Solar panels were installed using PV brackets fixed directly to the Metrotile roof system, providing a renewable energy source to support the building’s operational needs without compromising the roof’s integrity.

Smooth Installation & Industry Recognition

Installation of the Metrotile Bond roof progressed smoothly, with minimal disruption to the wider build programme. The completed training centre was subsequently recognised in 2025 with a CIOB client award, reflecting the success of the project from design through to delivery.
